Golden Globes Glisten

Taking a cue from years upon years of pageant winners, Kirsten Dunst stunned in a velvet gown, black velvet without the blues. Velvet is a rich, stunning fabric that photographs well, looks wonderful on stage and is classy. I love the plunge of this gown, sexy without being too revealing. And her role in Fargo, top notch!

Gold gowns shine on every woman but especially blondes. On the right, Brie Larson slays in this Calvin Klein original made for her and it fits like it. She said it was hugging her like Joan of Arc armor. Check her out in the heartfelt, beautiful movie Room or as the hilarious sister in Trainwreck.

Color is back! Greens, reds, marigolds and I love it all. Jada Pinkett Smith makes us green with envy in this emerald Versace stunner. And Natalie Dormer, who would look good in rags, is regal in red (I admit a love for those NC State Wolfpack colors too) with a beautiful black embellished collar to her gown. Check her out in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones and if you really want a treat, rent The Tudors. Her Anne Boelyn is to die for. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Another old pageant trick is white is right, always…and the stars know it. A really shining moment adorned in white tonight is Cate Blanchett in Givenchy. She is channeling Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby and giving the 20 somethings a real lesson in award show glamour.

Look at the back of Blanchett’s gown, youza!

Vintage vixen: Cate Blanchett showed off the fringing on her pink 1920s style dress as she walked the red carpet

On the accessories front, Jennifer Lopez and Emmy Rossum in Armani Prive’, were rocking really beautiful and ornate diamond lariat necklaces that made their solid color gowns pop.

Of course, there are always those looks that leave us thinking, hmmm…what was she thinking? Such as Eva Longoria: Wow, that is way too much embellishment.

Below, Lola Kirke does not have the skintone to pull off this mustard color like Jennifer Lopez or America Ferrera. A soft pink would have brought out her cool undertones better. For instance, see Leslie Mann in soft rose.

Heidi Klum‘s Marchesa grey feather gown is really dated and the color washes her out despite all the tan they used on her. The Project Runway star’s team needs to go back to the drawing board and also use a lot less Fake Bake. If you’re going to be over tanned for an award show, you need to wear white or a vibrant color.

My favorite unique look for the show was a black and emerald green print worn by Jaimie Alexander.

Another standout tonight is new mommy Olivia Wilde. She is sweet and sultry in this wine number by Michael Kors deep plunging gown.

Kors killed it with Kate Hudson’s 60s inspired cutout gown too and the styling of her hair is perfect for this look:

Major shout out to my all time favorite former Gilmore Girls cast member, Melissa McCarthy rocked her shiny gown showing off her hard won and huge weight loss. I am especially loving those rocking black heels!

The show is about to begin. Grab your popcorn and enjoy!
